Are you inspired by the work of another architect or artist? If so, who?

Yes – Minimalist Architects such as Tadao Ando. I am intrigued by the role that light plays in the dynamics of Architecture. Composition is everything. I enjoy architecture that effectively interweaves materiality, texture, form, and light.

Getting to know Bruce Dahlquist (part 2)…

Bruce DahlquistWhen you’re working on a project, what is your favorite part of the process?

Meeting with clients to help them understand their needs, then develop a program for design.

Why did you choose a career in architecture?

I am a creative person and enjoy the design process. The results of an architect’s design are not fleeting. It provides me with a sense of pride that I am designing something now that will be used and appreciated by others for generations to come.

What role do you think architects can play in solving social problems?

Architecture is the stage upon which the events of history are played out. Architecture and the buildings and the spaces between them impact our movement, security, and lifestyles.  These spaces can be designed by architects, but can also evolve through natural evolution over time. Well conceived buildings and spaces can provide for healthy places to live work and play. Buildings which reflect Green and Sustainable Design can help reduce our carbon footprint and reduce our dependence upon foreign oil. Every building an architect designs will have an impact on the environment. Good architecture has a positive impact. Poorly conceived architecture provides a negative impact. In either case, there is definitely an impact upon the stage on which the events of history are played out.  The architect is, then, the stage director or conductor.

Getting to know Eric Kretschmer…

ericWhy did you choose a career in architecture?

I love buildings and watching the whole construction process.  When it’s all said and done, there is something built that I worked on and, if done right, many people can enjoy for years to come.  Hopefully I’ll have a number of buildings around long after I’m gone.

Where did you go to high school?

Lake Zurich High School

When you’re working on a project, what is your favorite part of the process?

I have two favorite parts actually.  First is when we get into the meat of the CD’s.  I love turning the design into actual working drawings and working through all the details necessary to make it work.  I enjoy identifying challenges as the drawings come together and finding solutions to them. My other favorite part is during CA when I get to go to the site and see the drawing turn into an actual building.  It’s a great feeling when I can see it all come together.
